Bow Roundabout Campaign Team

The Ask

We are members of the community in Tower Hamlets and Newham, living on either side of Bow Roundabout.  We cross it on foot, on bikes and in cars for the school run, for transport links or shopping. As new housing goes up and new schools open in the area more and more people will be using the roundabout.  It us unsafe and unpleasant and we fear that there will be many more terrible accidents if something isn't urgently done.  A few small improvements to the roundabout will create a clearer indicator to drivers that this is a pedestrian zone too, will make it safer and brighter for pedestrians and will also turn the roundabout into a space that local residents could actually be proud of.This is what we ask

  • Signage indicating there are children crossing

  • Fencing or planting around the edge of the central roundabout area that pedestrians cross

  • Make cross walks more visible to prevent cars driving through

  • Bring forward plans to create two bridges to connect Bow and Sugar House Island

  • Create visual markings on the road to make it clearer to cars they are entering a new zone

  • Add floor art to the central zone to direct pedestrians towards the crossings

  • Introduce new lighting to make it brighter at night

  • Add planting on the roundabout and along the pedestrian walkways leading to the roundabout to help with ambiance, noise, air pollution

  • Work with the local artist community to create a mural on the underside of the flyover

Speaking with our friends

Interviewed by Ade Adeyemi for the East London Effect

Martha Sedgwick & Ade Adeyemi

Dan Elwick, Tower Hamlets

“I have seen many cars drive through red lights on that roundabout when I'm crossing with my kid.  I feel I take our lives into my hands every time we cross."

Abdi Mohamed, Tower Hamlets

"I've lived in Tower Hamlets my whole life. As more residents move into our vibrant area something must be done to make the roundabout a safer space"

Amy Gibbs, Newham

“I used to cross the roundabout every day to take my sons to school. I've now moved and my anxiety levels are hugely reduced. Something must be done to make that space safer.”
